Before I got here, I always imagined Guatemala City to look poor and underdeveloped. So on the ride from the airport to my apartment I was SO surprised to see shopping centers, movie theaters, tons of restaurants, bars, etc. Don't get me wrong- Guatemala is a VERY poor country and most places outside of Guatemala City are underdeveloped but I had no idea what to expect being in the City. Here are some things that are in the City that I was shocked to see:

IMAX Theater

Hooters

Waffle House (yep!)

Organic Stores

Gluten Free Bakery

Wine Bars

a Zoo

... and more.

I'll take pics and post when I come across more unexpected places. It's tough getting photos though because cell phone theft is rampant here in the City so I try not to have my cell phone out when I'm out and about.
